New Grading syllabus

The most up to date syllabus, amended to August 2013, is available to download from the Tora Judo Kai website.

The grading of 8th December will be run using this syllabus as a basis and therefore you must familiarise yourself with the changes that exist. Should you have any questions about the syllabus, how it will be used and / or how the grading is to be run so that you can prepare students then please ask.

Everyone is invited to come along to sessions on Mondays at Abbeywood to get extra training and feedback and of course this invitation is extended to instructors and coaches. In fact, we feel it is a great opportunity for higher grades to be able to train together and for us to help toward your own development within Tora Judo Kai.

Grading - 4th August

As you are now aware, the grading date has been set as above and as such offers us some time for final preparations.

We are very aware that gradings can be quite daunting and as such wish to offer as much help and guidance as we can. As such we have two extra training sessions on offer each week:

Monday – Abbeywood Community School in Stoke Gifford (Our new dojo with fantastic facilities)
Juniors 7pm – 8pm
14+ and Seniors 8pm – 9.30pm

Sessions are being run by the two main examiners and as such will give a chance to understand exactly what is required. It is extremely advisable for those currently yellow belt and above to attend, although lower grades will be welcome and catered for.

Dan Grades, including those needing ratification, should also attend as it is our intention to offer opportunities for grading within the year!

Thursday – Pill Dojo
6.30pm – 7.30pm

This is for anyone who is required to perform Kata for their grade (currently Green belt and above requires some element of Kata) and will offer an opportunity to brush up on those skills in readiness.

These sessions are of course in addition to your normal training and attendance each week will ensure all parts of the syllabus are covered! Even if you cannot make the grading date, please do try and attend so as to offer support to other club members.

We look forward to seeing you there!

As a member of Tora Judo Kai you are insured and welcome to train at any of the clubs.
Please consult the website on www.torajudo.org for more detail. Subscribing using the link on the website is a handy way to keep up to date with the latest information.

The clubs operating under the TJK & YK banner are steered by our hon. President Sensei Dave Chappell and Principals Steve Chappell and Ian Llewellin.

We are fortunate to receive support and guidance from our Patron Sensei Bill Burnside 8th Dan Judo and Shihan Roy Hancock 6th Dan Ju-Jitsu, Judo 5th Dan, Atemi-Jutsu 3rd Dan. We also have the back-up from governing bodies Bushido Budo Kai and the British Judo Association.

At the end of 2012 we decided that we would like to set up a council to look after a core account that would facilitate, organise and fund activities common to all member clubs. These activities would include membership, marketing, fund raising, sponsorship co-ordinating with NGB’s etc.

We are now at the point that we are looking for a representative from each club and officers to sit on the council which will in turn report to the President and Principals.

If you are interested in a council role Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership secretary or being the nominated person to represent your club on the council please can you contact Steve Chappell, Ian Llewellin or Dave Chappell and register your interest.

Other Developments

Rod Wren has taken on a role looking after kit and clothing purchases for the club. He has also set up a company called BudoGi which supplies judo suits and training mats. Purchases of suits from BudoGi will also have the club logo embroidered on it which looks very smart. www.budogi.co.uk  Please contact your instructor or Rod rodwren@torajudo.org  directly for Gi and clothing requirements.

Tora Judo Kai Abbeywood has been set up as the latest TJK Club. It provides an excellent training facility for all club members from with a large training area, sprung floor, air conditioned training hall, dedicated changing rooms, showers and the space to host our own group events and competitions. This is an ideal opportunity for club members to train on an additional night.

In 2009 we held a 1000 throw “Judothon” to help raise funds for new mats for Tora Judo Kai. This was supported by sponsorship from players from Pill and Hanham DoJo’s and businesses from around Bristol. We also received support from an Avon and Somerset Constabulary scheme.

Mats from Pill and Hanham have been moved to Abbeywood to help make the facilities at Abbeywood the best possible for all club members to train at. The good news is brand new matting at Hanham and Pill is being worked on with the help of BudoGi to replace the temporary matting that is at both those sites. This will also help us to independently run our competitions and events without having to rely on borrowing mats from clubs outside of our group.

Yawara Kwai Kingswood is another new session ran under the extremely experienced Sensei Moey Davis. This again offers our members another training session during the week.

We are looking to develop a squad of players to represent Tora Judo Kai at competition. If you feel you would like to do more competition and would like to become a part of the squad, please let your Sensei know so we can start coordinating our efforts.

Bristol County training - Saturday 26 January

On Saturday 26th January I headed for Patchway Judo Club to take part in my first Bristol County training session, run by Sensei Chris Mockridge expertly supported by Tora Judo Kai's very own Sensei Rebecca Maslen.

It was great to see some friendly faces from our own club as I arrived – Mark and Judy Maslen, Steve Chappell, and our British Championship medalists fresh from the rostrum, Renz Vallejera and Natasha Maslen. Following a surprising amount of man hugging evident in the foyer, training began with a warm up and some uchikomi-inspired drills.

Teaching began with a chance to practice everyone's preferred combinations with some great guidance from Chris Mockridge, reminding us that what we're taught in the grading syllabus is the same as what everyone else learns too, so a bit of ingenuity is a good thing. Some ground work gave the opportunity to work with a variety of different partners.

The session finished with a standing randori session in which I gave my breakfalls a good work out, and which reminded me once again of the need for relaxed arms, plenty of movement and not allowing your partner to get their favourite grip! The training session finished with a round-up from Sensei Mockridge of the impressive number of judoka present who had taken part in the national competition the previous weekend.

I remain astonished at, and grateful for, the opportunity that judo gives to train with and alongside people for who judo is a way of life, and those who take part at a giddying level of competition.

National success for Tora Judo Kai competitors

Two members of Bristol-based judo club Tora Judo Kai fought their way to places on the rostrum at the prestigious British Championships in Sheffield at the weekend. Picking up three medals between them, 19-year-old Natasha Maslen won silver in the under 21s competition for her weight category on Saturday, followed with a bronze in the Senior Women's competition on Sunday.

Renz Vallejera took bronze in the under 21s in his weight category with a spectacular throw for ippon, judo's maximum score, in the bronze medal fight.

Natasha’s day in the senior competition saw her come through the group stages comfortably after four fights, winning two by throws for ippon, the first in just over a minute. In her final pool she won one fight and then lost out to a current GB squad member with whom she trains. Natasha commented, " I've been working really hard during my first year at Bath and the results are now starting to come for me."

Natasha has trained at the Tora Judo Kai club in Pill since the age of 12 and is currently a student at Bath University, studying for a degree in Sports Performance. She trains 6 days a week for up to 5 hours a day, and is a member of the England Talented Development Squad. Last year she represented GBR at the Hungarian European Cup, finishing seventh, followed by a bronze medal at the Spanish Senior European Cup. Her ambition for the coming year is to represent GBR at the European and World Junior Championships.

17-year-old Renz Vallejera started the day with a hard fought contest in which he managed a win. He was unlucky to lose his second contest by a narrow margin and to the eventual silver medallist, and fought back through the repechage finishing the day with the bronze. He started judo when he was 8 years old, is currently studying for A-levels and is then hoping to join Natasha at Bath University. He also is a member of the England Talented Development Squad and was specially requested to train with the GBR judo team in their preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games last summer.

Tora Judo Kai was also represented by 17-year-old Chloe Robyns-Landricombe who fought well and was unlucky to be thrown towards the end of a close-fought match in her first round. She came through the repechage with a beautifully executed throw in her second fight of the day, but lost out to a much more experienced player in her third missing out on the medals on this, her first event at this standard of competition.

Chloe's instructor, Sensei Caroline Hooker, said "Through hard work and dedication Chloe has gone from an inexperienced judoka only 2 years ago to one who has shown she is capable of competing and winning contests at national level. The British Championships was only her second point-scoring competition, and she should be very proud of her performance."

The fighters were coached on the day by Sensei Judy Maslen, who said, "I am so proud of all three players, they are getting the results for all the hard work they are putting in."

All three competitors train with Tora Judo Kai, which runs clubs in Pill, Filton Abbeywood, Hanham, Kingwood, Shirehampton and Launceston in Cornwall. The club has been running for 19 years and trains over 100 children from the age of 6 years and adults in judo and ju-jitsu each week. Principal Steve Chappell said, "It’s a great club with a team of instructors who are able to facilitate its members judo requirements from beginner to competitors of the highest level. New members are welcomed into a positive and friendly environment."
